Thanks Eric, excellent site on oil pumps etc. On rereading my reply to Spiv, I think it could have been a lot shorter and clearer, thus:

With an oil cooler plumbed in series so that all oil that is not bypassed by the relief valve back to the sump flows through it, the cooler is designed to flow freely and adds only minimal friction/restriction, and no increase in pumping capacity would be warranted by reason of adding a cooler. Oil coolers that I am familiar with are plumbed in series.

With an oil cooler plumbed in parallel with some part of the system so that some oil flows through the cooler and the rest through the engine lube system proper, clearly there is more total oil flowing and an increase in pump capacity could be appropriate. I do not know that oil coolers are ever plumbed in this way, but it is possible. In such a case it would seem necessary to have a restrictor orifice in the cooler part of the system, because if it were free-flowing all the oil would take the easiest path and it would be difficult to maintain sufficient flow through the engine.

I do not work on heavy-duty engines, but have information that some are designed with two oil filters, a conventional full-flow filter that flows freely and catches bigger particles, and a second much finer filter on a bypass or parallel circuit that flows only a fraction of the oil pumped. Such a circuit would necessarily include means to restrict flow through the secondary filter, in order to prevent loss of pressure to the main system. Oil pump capacity in such a situation is certainly a consideration, just as with a parallel-flow oil cooler.

Well this is not getting any shorter haha, but stop reading if you're bored. In my area 105F-110F summer temperatures are not uncommon. The Saab cooling system was designed in Sweden and simply does not handle these temperatures well. There are various schemes for larger radiators which are doubtless effective. I chose to go with an oil cooler instead. I moved the stock radiator to the right, eliminating the two shields about 5" x 10" at either side, and put an oil cooler next to the radiator in the space created to the left. I think its identity can be found in the archives. The principle being that if you need to remove more heat from the engine, it does not matter how you accomplish that, remove it from the water or from the oil. (Oil is not widely recognized as a major means of removing excess heat produced in an IC engine, but should be.) I also have a temp sensor in the oil sump, good temps are 175F-200F; electric water pump; electric cooling fan; 2" exhaust; 2bbl Weber 28/32 DCDF maybe IRRC; electric fuel pump; and engine completely stock. All these mods make a big difference to power available at the wheels.
