The Little Saab that Could nets top 20 finish
WELLSBORO, PA -- While the roads of north central Pennsylvania chewed up and spat out nearly 30 rally cars last Saturday, the Keene, NH, based team of RallyHo! Motorsports kept their 1980 Saab 99 GLi out of the trees and away from the rocks to bring home a wrinkle-free car and a strong finish at the Susquehannock Trail ProRally.
Keene, NH, based driver Mike White and co-driver Marc Goldfarb of Atkinson, NH, started the rally in the 50th slot and worked their way steadily to a 19th place overall finish, fourth in class.
'To take our 20-year-old Saab and finish so well is a wonderful accomplishment,' White said. 'But, I am most proud of the team and all the hard work they put in to get us here.
'Roberti Motorcars really made the event possible for us. We're also grateful for the support Import Parts Specialists and City Tire gave RallyHo! Motorsports,' White said. 'Their parts and service played a big part in our success this weekend. We are especially pleased that our excellent finish added significant exposure to these businesses at a great value.
'The service crew did a spectacular job keeping the car together, especially crew chief Brett Rudolf,' White said. 'He brought our car preparation to a new level and kept a cool head when problems arose. I can't thank him enough.'
Substitute co-driver Goldfarb also was a huge contributor to the strong finish, White said.
'Marc is focused, organized, accurate, and simply a great guy to have as a co-driver! I learned a lot and had a ton of fun,' White said. 'He was also a very cool customer even after the second time I put the car on two wheels!'
Goldfarb also was pleased with his first effort for the team.
'It was a great rally,' he said. 'The roads were wonderful, not too dusty and very fast this year. The crew is one of the most enthusiastic I've ever worked with. I'd be happy to jump in the right seat anytime!'
White competes throughout the northeastern United States and in Canada in his specially prepared 1980 Saab 99 GLi.
SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) ProRally is often described as 'Real cars, on real roads, going real fast.' While rally cars must remain licensed and registered for street use, they also must be able to withstand incredible punishment on rough forest roads at racing speeds in adverse weather conditions. Rally teams race against the clock on closed roads.
White and the car will be appearing at the 2000 Saab Owners Convention at Lime Rock Park, CT, and Hudson Valley, NY. The event takes place July 7-9 with track days at Lime Rock Park on July 5-6.
After the Saab convention, RallyHo! Motorsports will take on the Maine Forest Rally in Rumford, Maine, on July 28-29 with co-driver Mike Ronan taking his usual place calling the routes.
