Jack,

I replaced the whole header-to-cat exhaust piece (header pipes) in our '88
9k, with a SAAB OEM part (not Starla, or other aftermarket mfgr). I
observed that the new part had a braided-stainless-steel flex section
(resembling a realy fat braided-SS brake hose). Quality and feel of the new
part were outstanding - almost too good when compared to the rest of the
car.

I paid $150 + $5 for shipping (part 93 93 455, dealer list $195), ordering
from Camelback-Phoenix.

The previous owner of the '90 9k that we now have said he paid over $200 for
an aftermarket version of the same part. This has weaker-looking joints
where the flex section meets the solid pipe, and the pipes themselves are
noticeably skinnier.

The '86 9kT I drive was adorned with a Midas header pipe. It's QUALITY
construction included a 90-degree square joint at the turbo outlet, a
harmonica-style flex joint, and piping which weighed about half as much as
the OEM stuff. It failed at the flex joint approximately 30 months after
installation, with zero winter exposure. It cost $149.95, labor not
included.

I replaced it with a SAAB header pipe, 93 90 600, $110 plus $5 shipping from
Camelback.

Some time later I was browsing the ScanTech web site, and found a part
listing for the braided-SS flex section alone. Pricing is not available on
the site, and they don't do retail sales. So, to get this part, you'd have
to call a ScanTech retailer (garage or parts store). Then you'd have to
cut/weld the old and somewhat rusty header pipes to match with the new flex
section, being careful to keep the overall length close to stock. That
might be worth the trouble for a potential savings of $100+.

Best regards,

David Prantl
