Vs: Difficult Gear Shifter
Posted by Pekka Harju (more from Pekka Harju) on Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:02:13
Dear Samantha, dear Saab friends,

Thank you for your request, concerning gear problems in 1986 turbo. First I thought that there
is some play in connecting rods between the shift lever and the gearbox - this is very typical
- but when you mentioned that the problem tends to fade away when you drive a couple of miles,
it propably is somewhere else. Clutch is one possible component, especially when you mentioned
that you can press clutch pedal some 1/4 of its travel before 'anything happens'. One possibility
is some worn bearings or synch rings inside the gearbox.

I recommend that first of all the clutch should be inspected. Please have it checked by a competent
technician, especially paying attention to the function of the slave cylinder. (I once had
a 1979 900 turbo which also had clutch problems. When the car was cold, it was difficult to
disengage any gears at all. The fault was simple: someone had changed the hydraulics fluid
container, which supplies hydraylics fluid to both brakes and clutch, to a model which was
taken from a car equipped with an automatic transmission. This container also had two fluid
outlets - but the one for the clutch was blocked!!! Thus the clutch main cylinder could not
receive any hydraulics fluid...) If the fault cannot be found from the clutch, then it must
be inside the gearbox. Usually it is easier and more economical to get a second-hand gearbox
than to start dismantling and overhauling the excisting box.

I hope that this was at least a bit of help to you. I hope that you will have your car fixed
and are able to share millions of miles with it in the future.

Best regards

Pekka Harju, Finland

The factory installed Clarion CD player on my 9000 Turbo, which is separate
from the radio/tape player, plays intermittently on the left channel, as if
there is a loose connection. The radio and cassette work fine out of the
left speakers, so I assume the problem is somewhere in the CD player or its
plug-in connection. Is there a fix short of tracking down a new CD player?

Could very well be pilot bearing in the clutch or some other clutch or
tranny problem. Might require clutch or tranny replacement. You may try
draining the gearbox and replace fluid with fresh Manual transmission
lubricant. I would think a saab shop could get you the right stuff.
Redline manual transmission lubricant is used by a lot of saab drivers. If
you go redline and do this yourself should cost $15. A saab shop might
sell you a gallon of their tranny fluid for $8. Clean all the iron of the
magnet on the tranny plug. I had similar shifting problems, and problems
were solved by doing the above change. It may not solve your problems but
I think it might give you some improvement at least. As your gearbox
likely is as old as the car I would not put 10W-30 oil into the gearbox as
one is supposed to be able to do. If the gearbox ever had manual tranny
lube in it and oil is put into the box the car will be very difficult to
shift and I am told you will destroy the gearbox this way.

Best of luck,

Anthony Alexander

I believe that the hoses are 2.5 mm to be sure go to
www.townsendimports.com and look at the parts category.

When I did this on my 85 900 and 89 9000t i purchased the silicon type
through townsend.
