Aero vs Audi
Posted by GoBuster (more from GoBuster) on Wed, 2 Aug 2000 15:06:56
I'll throw in my .02 re the discussion since I have both an Audi A6 4.2 and a
9-5 V-6

The 4.2 A6 comes with 255/40 17 High performance tires and I find the
handling vastly superior to the 2.7T and in similar league with the Aero. I
was able to drive the Aero quite a bit recently and liked it a lot. The 4.2
Audi is much stronger off the line (4WD and cubic inches make the
difference), but once under way the Aero feels just as strong as the V8. The
Audi rides a bit softer and is quieter, and, in my opinion has much better
seats, it is the highway cruiser of choice. The Aero feels taut and lighter
(which it is by about 500lbs!). Both have excellent brakes. The difference
between the Aero and standard 9-5 brakes was very apparent around Lime Rock
where the Aero's brakes felt good after several laps and my car's were
smoking and shuddering. I have 17' wheels and good tires on my 9-5 which
help the handling, (the standard tires, like those of the A6 2.7T are
'comfort' oriented), and I thought it handled fairly well on the track but is
noticeably softer than the Aero.

In conclusion, both Saab and Audi are good cars. The Audi has a tremendous
advantage with AWD but the Aero offers more driver involvement. I've clocked
my A6 using a G-tech at 6.44 seconds 0-60 (sea level, 80 F, 78%, level road)
and my Saab V6 at 7.6 sec under similar conditions (same day, same road). Of
course the Audi is a guzzler, averaging 18 mpg vs Saab's 22 mpg in mixed
driving. An Aero would probably do a bit better. My replacement when the
lease is up on my 9-5 might be an Aero wagon 5 speed - if they do something
about those seats!

Incidentally, although the A6 4.2 was priced about $7,000 higher than the
Aero, the lease was only $20 more per month (15k miles/yr., inceptions only
on both), the A6 2.7 was less than the Aero by about $50 so if you are
leasing there really is not much difference between them. I'm hoping Saab
offers programs on the Aero in due course since the lease on it was much
higher than my V-6 and there was only about $2,000 difference in the sticker
price.

Every day, I appreciate that I am fortunate to have two such fine cars.

Robert
