SCREAMING sterring rack ! any insight ?
Posted by Swede Boy (more from Swede Boy) on Sat, 7 Oct 2000 21:57:46
hello everyone
just finally got my 86 9000 T (143000 miles) back into driving condition...after some work and a few days of Intalian Tune up, it is as strong as ever (most of the time) ( and such a relief from the volvo 240 i had been driving).
however, as i began to drive it, all the steering fluid came out from somewhere. after i bought more fluid and put it in , the sterring assist came back with no problems for the first few minutes. After that, it began SCREAMING when turning the wheel. Also, assist is now a sporadic benefit of the system...sometimes it comes on , bringing strong and perilous oversteer.
The fluid I bought was from NAPA, which sold only one formulation (not the GM sterring fluid strictly called for in the manual). Is there a difference between GM fluid and others ? Has anyone ever heard of a sterring system making such loud, high-pitched whirring sounds ?
thank you very much. jay
