stalls under load (update)
Posted by Veeate (more from Veeate) on Fri, 27 Oct 2000 18:19:13
First off, thanks for the help I've gotten so far. It gave me a starting
point on this unfamiliar beast. It hasn't done it again, but I havn't taken
it out of the neihborhood yet. I HAVE use it for work tuesday though and
I'm a delivery driver!

Here is some more info I've dug up about the car. This is my first time
with a non V4 saab so my technical terms need some work. It is a basic 1985
900. 5 speed manual tranny. 8 valve H type engine. Non turbo. Mechanical
fuel injection. It has the Hall effect box too. And a 1 wire o2 sensor.
I'm not sure what else to look for.

Well, today I looked it over for vacuum leaks and found none. Where I
could I cliped the hose ends and refitted them for a better seal just in
case. It has always idled just fine though, even when the problem is
happening. Wouldn't a vacuum leak mess up the idle all the time?

I also pulled off the air bellows hose thing and cleaned the air control
plate thing (more of those technical terms again) which was a little gummy.
Wasn't sure if it could open and close all the way. Replaced the old air
filter while I was in there for good measure.

Cap and rotor in good shape. The plugs and wires have been replaced
recently, but not the coil. I have had problems with a coil shorting out
when hot on my ford Falcon before but then it would start at all till cool.
This one will start, but stall only while in gear.

How exactly do I check this? 1) It has only happened a couple times and
then went away when it cooled down. 2) it only happens when the car is
moving in gear (it puts me in the mind of that autoparts commercial where
the service guy is crawling around outside the car looking for the cause of
a noise while the car is driving along). It just quits. No sputtering or
coughing. You step on the gas but it doesn't run, the revs cycle down and
then all the dash light flare up when it quits. Just as if I turned off
the key or something. You can gun the gas while it is doing this and it
has no effect at all. But if you take it out of gear before it completely
dies and rev it, it will come back alive. And when I start it back up it
idles, and even revs up just fine... until I put it back into gear again.
Then I might get 50 feet or 50 yards before it stalls again.

Something just like this happened to my dads olds years ago but that was
the torque converter, which this one doesn't have not being an automatic.

As for the pressure accumulator, could this be the problem even if it is
easy to start?
Or the fuel pump? Could it have enough gas pressure to run and rev untill
under load?
Perhaps it doesn't have enough power somehow to run under load. What else
could cause this?

The book I have suggests I check the fuel injection leads in the
distributor but then give not details on how this is done. Could that be
it? What do I look for?

Someone suggested I disconect the amm. I still can't figure out where it
is though, or even if this car has one? Next time it happens I am going to
disconnect the O2 sensor to see if its the fuel injectors.

I also got a tip to look at the tach when it happens. If it doesn't
register it could be the crank sensor that tells the fuel and distributor
what to do. I still can't figure out if my car has one though. The book
is totally unhelpful with this.

I did find out that only one of the electric fans is working. I am going
to look around the local pull-a-part for a replacement motor tomarrow.
This should help keep it cooler. (I know its the motor because of the
awfull screeching noise it made once i got it to work at all. Ouch!)

Thanks in advance for your help. Sorry about the long post but I really am
sorta lost I guess. :)
