Eric,

I just spent the early part of this summer chasing the exact string of
symptoms in my '86 900t at 172k.

I know you have replaced the distributor and checked the wiring, but I would
urge you to go over a few wiring areas again.

At the insistence of some good folk on the Turbo! mailing list, I cleaned
all of my ignition system contacts with a strong contact cleaner (Radio
Shack spray w/brush). I paid special attention to the small three wire clip
to the Hall Sensor on the distributor - a typical source of problems from
heat fatigue. However, I cleaned the connectors to the AMM, APC, and ECU,
as you suggest, as well. I believe the '85 has the same/similar wiring.

Regarding the ECU, if there has been any moisture problems on the passenger
side (a common affliction) the ECU may be beyond repair. Check the contact
condition closely there.

I would also check the AMM to see if it is still in spec. That being the
case, I would then carefully check all the air intake plumbing downstream
from the AMM (which is pretty much everything). Air leaking out of/into the
intake system after it has been metered by the AMM can also give you similar
symptoms. Likewise, check the vacuum lines.

That being said, vacuum will give you a small, consistent idle surge to
about 1k - 1.5k. The bad electrical contacts (esp. to the Hall) gave me the
surging, sputtering, even missing performance.

Best of luck. Keep me posted on what you find.
