You can't buy a 'new' transmission from SAAB. You could buy a rebuilt one from SAAB, or you could buy a rebuilt transmission from somebody else. SAAB uses an out of house rebuilder for the ones you buy over the counter, which means they probably are no better or worse than the ones your local SAAB expert would build for you themselves. The difference between 'Rebuilt' and 'Reconditioned' is the only question, and while there may be some 'industry standards' for those two terms, there is no consensus about their usage. Generally one would expect 'rebuilt' to have included more 'hard parts' (gears, shafts, etc.) than perhaps a mere 'recondition,' (where maybe just the obviously unusuable parts are replaced, not AND and ALL parts that may show signs of wear.) the fact is that it's impossible to replace all the hard parts in a transmission (one gear could cost $300 for instance!) and sell it for what SAAB or most other places retail them for.
If the pinion bearings were replaced and properly set up, and the tranny otherwise shifts and sounds ok, the differences at this point are probably negligible. besides, an 83 900 ain't worth that much anyway! good luck!
