An intermittent ground can cause this. Bang on the dash with your fist as you drive, see if it comes alive again.
You might get some more complicated answers from the cognoscenti, but it pays to check the simple things first. Your 1986 is aging, and it's time to check, clean and reattach as many grounding points as possible on your car!
