Yes they are known to corrode unless you know it happens and you spend the rest of your life painting it every year.
If you can find one in good condition from a junk yard it should not be too expensive. However, I have seen many cars in junk yards exactly because the lower wishbone had failed as you describe. You have to use one from the passenger side of the car.
It would be possible to weld it but I am not sure it (a) would be safe to drive (b) you would not damage the wheel alignment and start spending money on tires.
Replacement is not difficult but it can involve quite a lot of work (from memory you could only replace it by removing first the hub or cv-joint whatever is the name, to give you space to get to the bolt at the end of the wishbone).
If you intend to replace it email again and I will scratch my brain for instructions.
