Air conditioner not working; summer is coming; HELP!
Posted by Dan LeFebvre (more from Dan LeFebvre) on Sun, 6 May 2001 21:40:51
Dear fellow Saabophiles:

I know this is a not an uncommon question, but I'm having some trouble here.
My a/c is not working. I have a 1990 900 16v. I've tried shorting the
connectors to the low pressure switch--nothing happened. Through continued
efforts, I've been able to realize that my compressor/clutch is okay by
connecting the 30 and 87b pins in the relay socket (I think those are the
numbers; in any event, the compressor engaged). I've been reading through
the list archives and I now think that my situation may be unique. When I
press in the snowflake switch the cooling fan does not come on.
(Incidentally, during normal operation of my vehicle BOTH fans always come
on simultaneously. I don't know if this is normal, but when the temp gets
1/2 to 3/4 up on the guage, both fans kick on and really draw quite a bit of
Amperage--enough to strain the idle for a second; could this be related to
my problem or is it normal?) Well, the root of my question is the
observation that when I depress the snowflake switch the flake 'lights up'
temporarily and then goes out as soon as I let go. NOthing in terms of a/c
operation engages during this brief 'lighting up' period. Manipulation of
the switch doesn't seem to help (i.e. I can't hold it in with my finger;
there simply is no way to keep the flake lit). Before I start tearing
things apart I wanted to see if this indicates another specific problem (is
some faulty system 'feeding back' to the switch) or if it is just a bad
switch? Thanks for your help.
