Rich,
I would suggest leaving the instrument cluster in place, and just remove speaker panels on the top of the dash and the trim piece beneath the dash. You would have to remove the trim piece anyway to remove the instrument panel. For most situations, it has been my experience that it is easy enough to get to the instrument cluster and everything else behind the dash by simply removing the trim piece. Here is my experience with dash removal on a 1985 900 S. I believe it is very similar to the 1986 900 model. First, remove the console if there is one - should just be a few screws and perhaps a bolt behind the ashtray. Also, remove the black plastic piece beneath the steering column - there are two screws in the front that you will have to turn the wheel to get to and then just the one plastic fastener through the bottom. For the long trim piece that runs at knee level along the width of the car, there are essentially three bolts you need to be concerned about that hold it in place: One bolt is located behind the ash-tray. The other two bolts are accessible only from the engine compartment - directly behind each wheel well is a 10 mm bolt...these are fairly easily removed with a long extension on a rachet. Once these bolts are removed, just pull the trim piece down and away. From there, you should have access to most of what you need to get to. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Greg Bender
