NG900 2.3L Manual Front End Shimmy & Tranny Noise [saabnow]
Posted by The Saab Network (more from The Saab Network) on Mon, 22 Apr 2002 12:53:55
Message from Charles Sharp Subject: NG900 2.3L Manual Front End Shimmy & Tranny Noise ================= I have a '98 Saab 900S 2.3L manual with 105K miles on it. The car has been well maintained and driven mostly on the highway. In the past 5K miles, I have had two problems develop.
1) A pronounced front end shimmy/vibration occurs at highway speed and is especially pronounced during deceleration and acceleration. I have had the wheels balanced twice but it has not helped. I am preparing to have the wheels rotated to see if there may be a bent rim, but I have not hit any big bumps or holes, so I'm not sure there is a problem there. 2) On deceleration with the car in gear, there is a pronounced, rhythmic gear whine. It is more pronounced in the lower gears but is so loud that it has been commented on by several passengers. The dealer offered no suggestions other than an offer to 'break open the transmission' for a minimum charge of apx. $1,300.
Any suggestions, advice, or insight regarding either of these problems would be appreciated. Thanks.
Rob Sharp
