1988 9000S distributor question [saabnow]

Subject: 1988 9000S distributor question
=================
I've noticed sluggish performance of my 1988 9000S recently, especially at low
RPM's. Everything is in great shape, tuned up, new cap rotor, plugs (OE wires
still check out OK) etc. I've been looking for the source of the sluggish low
RPM performance and have realized that the distributor rotor cannot be rotated
by hand, i.e., hand activating the mechanical advance, like every other car I
have owned.

I know this sounds stupid, but does this car have a mechanical advance, or is
mine just frozen up solid?

There is no vacuum advance and I know the engine management system has ignition
advance and retard capability, based on feedback from the knock sensor. What I
don't know, is if the computer handle the entire distributor advance curve?
I've checked the dreaded Haynes 9000 book and not found anything. Before I pull
the (untouched for 14 years) distributor apart to free up a mechanism I'm not
sure is there, I figure I'd ask our local brain trust first.

BTW - I had my transmission shifter bushing (the one connecting the shifter the
gearbox, finally fail, but it failed slowly and I knew what it was as it started
happening and was able to get home with the ability to shift in 3,4,5 and R. I
lost 1 and 2 before I got home. I wired it back together with hanger wire. I
bought the new bushing, but will wait until the next oil change to install it.
The hanger wire really lets me know why the bushing is there. I get to feel the
vibration and hear the gearbox whine. I had learned about the inevitable
failure years ago on this list and knew enough to keep from getting stranded.
Thanks!
