It's brightness depends first on whether or not all three of it's
illumination bulbs are operational. These bulbs are somewhat difficult to
replace. The procedure is to remove the a-pillar trim, speaker covers,
dash-top, and finally the instrument cluster complete with the EDU
instrument attached at the bottom.

There's also an active illumination brightness control for the EDU. In
bright ambient conditions, the display should be bright (so you can see it),
while at night it should dim down appropriately. Whether or not this works
properly depends on the photocell in the clock instrument (analog clock or
digital clock/SCC trip computer). Our '93 CSET came with the digital clock,
and it's photocell wasn't working properly, making the EDU display full-dim
regardless of ambient light intensity.

I swapped it with an analog clock unit from an earlier 9000 model, and EDU
brightness control was restored.

On that note, I have collected several spare analog clock units. Some cause
a constantly full-dim EDU, others cause a constantly full-bright EDU, and
some of those that provide correct EDU brightness control lack the 'R'
and/or 'INFO' button illumination...
