2.3 Cam Chain [saabnow]
Posted by The Saab Network (more from The Saab Network) on Mon, 25 Nov 2002 17:28:48
Message from Alan Sullivan Subject: 2.3 Cam Chain ================= My 1990 9000S 2.3 liter with 213,000 miles is making noise from the area of the cam chain drive. It runs fine, but sound like a cement mixer. The rubber pad directly over the cam drive gears on the inside of the cam cover shows rub marks from the chain. I called Swedish Car.com in Lorton, VA for an estimate. They told me it would require removal of the cylinder head and twenty hours labor; they estimated around $4,500.
They were adamant that they would not be willing to thread in a new chain only, as they can not be sure what kind of shape the rest of the components are in.
My questions:
Does replacement of all of the cam drive-related components require removal of the cylinder head? Is their estimate reasonable? Is replacement of the chain only a waste of time? Does the presence of the chain noise mean the engine will grenade in the near future if I do nothing?
Thanks,
Alan 1990 9000S 1994 Aero
