Erik, You are correct that the rear supports are not removable with the rear clip in place (BTW, you must have a late '73 if it has large bumpers). I think if you look closely at your 71 you will see that there is a piece of angle iron at each corner that fastens the small bumper to the clip and then to the car. If these are critical I can not say. The bottom strip seems to provide ample support for the clip. Perhaps the angle pieces were for left/right centering (something of a problem on Sonetts). What are you going to put in place of the large bumper?? Why not cut the support off flush with the fiberglass and leave the flange in place.

P.S. For whatever reason, the front support flanges are on the OUTSIDE of the fiberglass and the supports can be readily removed.
