Ah yes, I remeber this problem. Part of the shift linkage is a rubber bracket
that over time becomes hard and cracks. Shifting then becomes a hit and miss
proposition. The piece I'm talking about is back near the firewall and is part
of a metal rod that goes into the transmission. It can be reached somewhat
difficulty from the engine bay or a little easier as I recall from below.

As a temporary fix, I aligned the pieces back together by hand, slipped a hose
clamp over the whole thing and tightened it up. Suprisingly, it worked better
than before. When I finally got around to pricing a new one (as I recall about
$50), I decided my temporary fix was good enough.

Good luck with it.
