Antifreeze smell
Posted by Ben Deron (more from Ben Deron) on Sat, 2 Oct 1999 15:47:01
Hello:
Just after I bought my 89 900 this spring, I replaced the heater valve to get rid of the antifreeze dripping all over the floor. When I was in there, I swabbed as much of the air ducting as possible. After putting everything back together and driving around for a week, I still noticed a strong antifreeze smell when I turned on the heater. So I went back in, visually checked the heater core for signs of leaking (none), removed the carpet, rinsed it off completely and let it dry in the sun for the afternoon, as well as washing the floorpan. Still, I could smell antifreeze when I turned on the heater. Figuring it was just residual antifreeze on the sitting on the core, I let it be for the summer. Now, as its getting colder, I'm still getting a rather strong smell when I turn on the heater. Also, I would get an occasional whiff during the summer, even without the heater.
I do not seem to be loosing any coolant in the expansion tank, and there does not seem to be any antifreeze condensing on the windshield.
Any ideas? The smell is driving me nuts, and I want to get rid of it before winter hits.
Thanks George 89 SPG, with nice, clean carpets and a rather unique scent
