48 SAABs = SAABtoberfest
Posted by Thor Carlson (more from Thor Carlson) on Sat, 9 Oct 1999 22:33:55
The rains held. Again. Blaithin (and Hubby Dean) outdid themselves again as a stupendous number of true SAAB enthusiasts turned out for Pennsylvania SAABtoberfest '99. This was the best representation of SAABs seen at a tour yet with models ranging from 2 passenger to 7 passenger. '69 (V4 Sonett) to '99 (Viggen, 9-5 wagons). Four or five 99s. A 96. Bill Trench's 95. A few 9-3s (including Larry West in a factory 9-3 convertible). And, of course, beaucoup classic 900s.
Turbo!'s own Christine Krueger won the farthest distance traveled award (890 miles from Atlanta), edging out poor Sean Mullady (a mere 500 or so?) from Michigan. Chris Moberg was sadly missed (engine troubles, reportedly).
Duane solved Seth Bengelsdorf's boost problem, winning a free one year subscription to NEWS.
Geoff Clarke's engine compartment received much attention due to its creative wiring schemes and radiator fan mounted behind the intercooler.
Kevin Quigley (sans pipe) ran the event with a camcorder mounted inside Turbo9. Watch for the Quicktime movies!
David Hattery drove his '74 99LE with three(!) passengers and seemed to have no trouble at all keeping up.
You shoulda heard the SuperTrapp exhaust on the 96.
A bucket of Blaithin's marvelous c**kies was passed around a lunchtime.
The raffle table must have been groaning under the strain of all the goodies donated by local businesses: car care kits, frisbees, t shirts, etc. SAAB Cars USA donated some posters, pins and hats. Seth donated some John Moss tranmission rebuild videos. Scott Paterson contributed a SAAB Network sweatshirt, t-shirt and decals. I can't recall everyone or everything but what a great, generous group of people.
The gorgeous V4 Sonett (Massachusetts) won the Second Annual Highly Coveted Drool Bucket Award, which included (in addition to the bucket) a one year subscription to NINES, donated by Dean and Blaithin.
It was cool and damp all day making it 'a good day to boost'. I think Mjollnir's BFGs are finally broken in.
Thanks Blaithin and Dean (and sons Jeremy and Tyler, erstwhile navigators for our tour leaders) for another great event!
