Hi,
I don't think the transmission is still the ZF, but I'm not sure what it is.
The engine is very similar to the old 2.3, but it has routinely undergone
tweaks and improvements since it was introduced in 1990. In it's current
state, it uses the LPT turbo (unless you get it in the Aero or Viggen), low
friction engine parts (improves economy, not power), and the latest engine
management gizmos that make it an 'ecopower engine' (not sure what that means
other than that it's LEV or ULEV). I think it's also now also a drive by wire
system that has been retuned for a flatter, broader torque curve, like in the
Viggen and Aero.
It seems to be a very durable engine - mine (in my '91 9000T) has 117K,
burns no oil, and runs flawlessly (and it's fast!!). Mine seems quite sensitive
to the type of gas with respect to what mileage I get, though. It ranges from
27mpg on the highway to over 30. It's sensitive to air temperature too.
Problems I've had with it have been the DI cassette, which fried itself one day
in the Wallmart parking lot, and burned exhaust valve guides which had to be
replaced for $700 (ouch!!) because it was burning oil. The engine (at least my
version of it - a lot of issues have been addressed since then!) seems to have
a lot of issues that tend to pop up every hundred thousand miles, and they're
all focused in the top end. DI cassette ($300 part), head gasket, the valve
problem that I had, and then a lot of people think the timing chain should be
replaced every 100K as well. I know the DI cassette has undergone a number of
revisions, but I'm not sure how many other of these issues have been resolved
since my year. I imagine the 9-5 would get significantly better and more
consistent mileage.
Also, I've heard the 2.3 LPT engine can be upgraded to full turbo for
somewhere around $1000.

Hope this helps,
-Derek
