electrical problem

Need some help with this one. Recently bought an 86 900T. While fixing
all the little things the previous owner neglected I noticed that both high
beam headlights were blown. Checked to see if ther was power there, there
was. Installed new headlights. Everything works fine. Notice that the idle
rises and lowers every once and a while. When the idle rises and lowers the
headlites dim quite alot and then become bright again. Much more noticeable
than just a change in rpm. While rechecking the lights both highbeams blow
again. Whats up ? Why would just the high beams blow ? Is it the voltage
regulator ? If so, must I remove the a/c and the alternator to replace the
regulator. I have no manuals to help me along with this repair. TIA
