Wheels 9000
Posted by Philip Hult (more from Philip Hult) on Thu, 24 Feb 2000 08:58:40
Here is one for those with knowledge of wheel sizes on a 90 9000 CD Turbo.
I have a '90 9000 CD Turbo. Many moons ago I purchased to alloy rims from the junk yard for use as with snow tires on the front of my car. These are the 15 spoke (aka Teardrop) alloys so common on all models and years of saabs. I have however recently discovered that there are at least 3 different 4x108mm bolt pattern wheels that look exactly the same. Two of them have the 5 hole for the centering pin, of those one is 15x5.5, and the other is 15x6. The book at the junk yard says that the 15x6's are for the 9000, and the 15x5.5's are for the 900's in the 89-92 years. My SAAB guy, (Jerry at Foreign Auto Specialists) tells me that the offesets are completly different and that they are non interchangeable, bad things will happen, brake callipers falling off.....scary stuff. So when I was at the Junk yard and they brought me the 15x5.5', I said they were the wrong ones, and had the order in the others from their warehouse. After having made a fuss, about the 15x5.5 vs. the 15x6 and standing firm, (hey, jerry said...) that I couldn't use the other ones, I put down my $50 deposit and they called in the order. They'll be here tomorrow.
The Problem: just for kicks, I went out and checked the pair on the front of my car. they are the 15x5.5' for the 900. I have been running them for around 8 mo w/o problems on the front wheels. I have 4 tires coming in from Milawakee (Hakka NRV's) and will be mounting them for a road trip on Mar. 2nd.
Just to complicate things, I am over sizing the tires a hair, I am using a 205/60R15 instead of the OEM 195/65's. I know they'll fit with the 6' wheels, but the 5.5'?
The Question:
Do I, (a) Get the 15x6's I've special ordered and have a mismatched set of wheels and have tires that look a little different (b) Appoligize to Don at the Junk yard and get the 15x5.5's that match the ones I have but are for a 900, or (c) Screw it, spend a lot more money, and get 4 matched 9000 wheels.
I am hoping that option (a) or (b) is acceptable, as I don't won't to blow an extra $170 right now.
Sorry for the long post.
Philip
