In 1985 the turbo got a 16 valve engine and in 1986 all US SAABs got the 16 valve engine. If this car is not a turbo then don't buy it. The auto is much slower than the 5-speed, however, the turbo would make up for this. The non turbo 88 should have the 16 valve engine and new it had about 160 horse power. The 88 turbo had 195 horse power.
