I always recommend using a good engine flush (AMSOIL or BG are the best I know of) if the car has over 15,ooo miles or so. If you don't (or won't) use a flush, change to synthetic, and then plan to change the oil filter after 1000-1500 miles. Then watch for sudden increase in oil consumption. If you get it, change the oil and filter again at 3,000 miles or so. Later, you can normally extend the drain to at least the maximum recommended by the car manufacturer, or longer with the right synthetics. >I thought it was bad to mix the two types of oil and one would assume that >some of >the old oil would be carried over from one oil change to another. Synthetic and petroleum based oils are compatible. Of course, there will be a bit left after the first drain, but not significant, >Also how do you like the Castrol 5w50 ? Not much. No Japanese or American, and few European, manufacturers recommend anything with higher than xW-30 viscosity these days.
