Subject: Re: Fitting a turbo?

You will need an exhaust Manifold (they are different for the 16 valve and the 8 valve) and a down pipe to the catalytic converter, a turbocharger with a waste gate, an intercooler to cool down the air coming in to the intake, an oil cooler for the engine oil, oil supply lines and oil return lines, an APC box with all the sensors and cables (knock sensor etc...), all the plumbing and silicon hoses, a turbo bypass valve is a nice add on because it will cut down on the turbo lag. The best thing is to find a junked out Saab that has all these and buy the engine. It would be wise to change the pistons and exhaust valves they are different on a turbo. The pistons are deeper to create less compression and the exhaust valves are specially coated with sterylite (or something like that) because of the heat. Do change the head gasket (just get the engine rebuilt, it helps to start with a fresh engine). Now if you don't use the APC box you will get lots of pinging and need to manually adjust the waste gate. If you do not change the pistons you need to bring the boost down or you will blow up the engine remember the non turbo compression is higher than the turbo one and this is why you will have to lower the boost pressure. Also need to decrease the fuel pressure by installing a adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I highly recommend to get the Robert Bentley manual at www.rb.com . Also check out these sites for parts and help: http://www.group-6.com/ www.sasab.com http://nospam.com/turbo/ http://www.townsendimports.com/default.htm http://www.teleport.com/~bertram/volvoapc/index.shtml This last site is for a Volvo but he uses Saab APC system and has all you would need in detail. I am doing the same to my 86 16v. Good luck Johnny Herrera 1985 Saab 900S 8v 1986 Saab 900S 16v
