Subject: Vacuum hoses and high idle


Hello everyone, Last week after a night of rain, I started my 88 900S and started driving to school. I hadn't made it to the end of the street when the car started sputtering and then finally died. It would not run. I got a ride to school and after a few hours, it started and sputtered but I was able to get it home. I figured that there was a problem with the ignition system seeing as it happened after the rain. I bought the car about 6 months ago and hadn't done much to it. I figured it might need a tuneup. I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air and fuel filter (which I think was original). A mechanic I know told me that he always cleans the intake manifold and throttle body with a cleaner and checks for vacuum leaks when he does tuneups. I removed the bellows and cleaned the throttle and plate (it was very carboned up inside). The car runs fine, but now idles very high, at about 1400 rpm. The other problem is that there were a few vacuum lines completely broken. These lead into a canister on the drivers side fender. There are many lines that lead there but I'm not sure which goes where. I looked in the Haynes manual and can't find any schematic for vacuum hose routing. What does this canister do, and how do I go about replacing the lines to the right spot? Thanks to everyone in advance for any help avaiable. Adam
