Subject: A costly problem that I cannot seem to fix!
I am really becoming very exasperated by this problem I have with my Saab
900 turbo which is costing me a bomb to rectify. I hope someone can give me
some advice before I fork out yet more money in vain.
Over the last few weeks I have replaced the nearside wheel bearing, ball
joint, shock and now the CV joint in order to get rid of this problem but it
still exists. The symptoms are as follows:
when I accelerate hard from low speed I usually (but not always) get a
thumping/judder from the nearside. From the steering wheel it feels like
the driveshaft is bent. At higher speeds I do not have this problem. The
other symptom (which may be related or may be not) is a grinding feeling
when I corner hard on this wheel (i.e. going round tight right-hand bends).
It cannot be the wheel bearing because I have had it renewed and have
checked it myself for movement and/or roughness.
The one possibility I am left with is the inner universal joint. The Haynes
manual (hopeless as it is) suggests that a symptom of a worn inner joint is
vibration on acceleration. Is this a likely cause?
I hope someone can provide some suggestions,
Thank you,
Alan
