I'm waiting for the dreaded moment when my '85 8v Turbo's transmission needs to be replaced (132k not totally verified), and am wishing I bought a more long-lasting 900. Specifically one poster said the post 89 transmission cases were stronger with larger bearings, therefore longer lasting - do these retrofit an '85 BTW??. The same posting stated that the transmission was not truly robust enough for the turbo engines or anything much over 130hp, particularly when hard driven. Others have replaced 8v engines with 16v ones because they are considered 'more reliable'. Hearsay states that some years of production for 900s were better than others. So the next time I buy a SAAB 900 (if I sell rather than renew the tranny), what are the good years, engines and transmissions? Should I avoid the turbos? I imagine that if you drive the car without going into the turbo range it's the same as an injection model, but who can resist temptation? Trouble is the guy that had my turbo before me drove it 'like a prat' in his own words, though he looked after the bodywork nicely...... -- Andy Evans, email: arts.psychologynopsamm.net Our Website: www.artspsychology.mcmail.com
