I got my shocks for my 84 900T16 from Abbots, they are adjustable Koni's
which are difficult to get hold of. Their service is also first rate,
the shocks arived at my house within 2 days of phoning in the order.
The improvement in the cars body and suspension control is amazing.
The biggest difference is that you can push really hard on twisty bumpy
country roads where the standard shocks just give up. Even on lower
stiffer springs the ride is actually smoother on smooth or very bumpy
roads. However it is worse on rutted roads or when crossing expansion
joints. The springs I have where not from Abbots but are of similar
specification. The car is about 20-25 mm lower than before, the fronts
are 17% stiffer and the rears about 30%. The car is actually
controllable now on the limit rather than a fishtailing danger as it was
before. Body roll at normal speeds is eliminated, despite the fact that
I only have a rear anti-roll bar. The front anti-roll bar isn't needed
on the classic 900, and in my opinion was SAAB's biggest mistake in the
cars engineering i.e. it has far too big an effect on the suspension and
makes the car a pain to drive on twisty bumpy roads. Most of the roll at
high speed seems to come from the tires. I use the excellent new
Avon zv1 which cost me £47 a piece for 205-55x15. When the fronts
are gone I will put 50's on instead.
Traction and braking are also significantly better.
I would not hesitate in plugging the Abbott brothers! (pardon the
obvious inuendo)
Neil.
