I was told (by a Saab dealer) that there was originally a plan to offer extra seats in the boot, but the idea was canned for bean-counter and safety reasons. Apparently the tailgate had already been signed off by then, complete with release handle. Still, it's quite a good defence against carjackers who bundle you into your own boot and drive away with your car ...
