You need to check the basic things like rust, tyres, ball joints etc as well as: Check for hoses that go nowhere. (a sure sign that a dodgy mechanic has been at the car) Turbo lines for decay and splitting. Oil leaks from around the base of the turbo unit Oil in the bottom of the air cleaner. Oil leak between the gearbox/trans and the engine at the firewall end. Manual ? Check for spigot bearing whine... most noticable in 5th gear on acceleration. Check the clutch for shudder particularly in reverse. Auto ? Check that the change up/down is smooth and lurch free. Check for oil leak on the front right hand side of the engine where the transmission joins just behind the bell housing. (exhaust side). Forward and reverse while on left and right lock... make sure there are no noises in the CVs. Look at the suspension mounting bushes inside the engine bay on both guards.
