We go through this rather often here - here's the short version: 1. Safety. Keys that are between the seats, won't be impaled into knees in frontal collisions. 2. Ergonomics / usability: When starting the car, you put on the seat belt, turn the key, take off the brake, and put the car into gear; all of these tasks are grouped in the same location, so your hand isn't flailing from one part of the cockpit to another. 3. Security: A direct locking of the gearshift mechanism is easier when the lock and the gearshift are close to each other as in this design. I find it hard to understand why some people fixate on something they just don't understand, as being somehow "ominous". Dave Hinz
