I had a 900 a few years back with a whiny pinion bearing. I did this exact experiment. It got progressively worse over about 12k miles (by which point it wasn't unbearably loud, but there was no mistaking it's presence). Then the car was written off, so I never got to find out. I think it can take a very long time to go, but I wouldn't want to bet on it. -- Grunff
