In Europe ( where Mercedes is made ) the only fuel guaranteed to be available at every pump is 95 RON. If you make an engine that *needs* higher you're ging to have trouble selling the car ! The ECU may of course obtain better performannce from a higher octane if it's used. > The manufacturers would not specify a higher octane fuel if it wasn't > needed. Of course not. Since modern ECUs can adapt the issue is moot anyway. > >>its not so much that the engine will "benefit" with > >>increased hp, the benefit would be that the engine is less likely to > >>self destruct from pinging. > > > > > > Utter garbage. The ECU will adapt to the fuel regardless. > > Not all ECU's can compensate for poor fuel, Who said anything about *poor fuel* ? ( the discussion was actually about regular vs premium - which is typically 95RON and 98RON in Europe ) Fuel sold in Europe has to conform to a spec. The motor maufacturers ensure their cars will run on it ! If your country allows poor fuel to be sold - complain tothe legislators. > oxygen and knock sensors > aren't 100% perfect, many late model hi performance can still ping. > Anyone dumb enough to run an expensive engine on crap fuel deserves the > very expensive repair bill. No-one was talking about *crap fuel* ! Where do you go to buy *crap fuel* btw ? Graham
