Marcelo and Sergio own and operate Autowerkes and deal with
Swedish and German autos only.  I can't say enough about the quality of
their service and dependability. They are honest and forthright on their
repairs and service and make the customer their number one priority. You
won't find a better shop.

Auto Parts International
6350 South Hanover Rd.
Elkridge
(410) 579-8422

The owner's name is Jack. Their work is excellent and parts and labor
prices are very good. I have been using them over a year and referred
several Saab owner's. They have all been very happy and satisfied with the
way they were treated and the work done, according to feedback from them
after their visits.
This is API's new location and phone number. Their new facility is nicer
and larger. They are  excellent Saab techs, and they also service Volvo,
BMW, Mercedes, Asian and domestic makes. I have been going there over two
years. They do excellent work and the price is right. Their location is
about 1.3 miles north of Rt. 100, about a half mile off of Rt. 1. The
service area will be on the right.

Auto Parts International (API)  moved to a new location several months ago,
15 minutes from the old location.  Still one of the best and most honest
shops you'll find in the Baltimore- D.C. corridor. With a bigger shop, they
are now able to service my American-driving and Japanese-driving friends.

Although this is a Goodyear tire and general auto service center, they have
one mechanic named Henry who is a Saab and Volvo genius.  He used to own a
Saab and Volvo repair shop before Brooks-Huff hired him.  Henry has three
Saabs in his own family, and his own 900 has 275K on it.  He has been able
to identify nearly every noise my Saab has ever made just by hearing it.
He also has a complete assortment of Saab and Volvo specialty tools from
his own (now defunct) shop.  He is an older man and is also one of the
nicest, most straightforward and honest mechanics I have ever met in my
life (and I have met about a hundred).
This is an update on Henry; the mechanic that I mentioned worked at
Brooks-Huff Goodyear. He now (as of late 2000) works at Auto Parts
International.

Colesville Sunoco (formerly Colesville Exxon East)
13335 New Hampshire Ave.
Silver Spring

This service shop used to be the Colesville Exxon that is also
listed here. I called several places on this list when my car was
missing and had the check engine on. Noel, the mechanic here at the
Sunoco, gave what felt to me like the most reasonable response and labor
estimate. I am not going to name names, but two of the other places on
this list told me that their technicians would require ridiculous
amounts of time necessary to change a common part, and a different one
tried to scare me into making the most expensive repair first instead of
seeing if the cheaper one would work. Noel just wanted to get my car
working, gave me plenty of information that all made good sense, and
mentioned that he is always happy to find a new Saab customer. (Besides
Saabs, this service station also works on Volvos and Volkswagens.) The
repair was simple and fast, and my car now works fine. Also, because the
Sunoco gas is open until 11 pm, you can drop off and pick up your car
with !
the cashier after working hours -- very handy.

I have taken both OG and NG 900's there, and they have been very good to me.
Don and Becky Danneman have been servicing Saabs (and other less interesting
stuff) for over 25 years now, and have a great reputation in the area for
good service.

Rosemont Motors

Ed Gunneau, owner of the shop, was the chief mechanic for the Saab dealer in
Frederick in the late 70's. When they closed (the owner moved to Texas), Ed
opened Rosemont Motors. His shop specializes primarily in Saabs and has
always performed quality work at reasonable prices. The only problem is that
you have to make an appointment about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks in advance, but it's
worth the wait. They can do everything, and because of their long experience
with Saabs, they know what to look for to solve the problem. I've been
dealing with Ed since my first Saab (1979).

I have taken my '93 900 to Rossi's on and off for years and
have been very happy (it's only been on and off because I moved out of
state, and now live in Baltimore so use API instead).  I referred the
very picky owners of 2 other '93 900s who also use Rossi's regularly now
as well.  Stephen Thomas is the manager and very honest.  They are very
good at diagnosing, and I have never felt that I'm being sold something
more than I need.  They were also extremely helpful when my local
service station told me I needed over $1000 of repairs to meet
inspection; Rossi's took a look at the items, pronounced that
ridiculous, found instead an urgent brake line bulge that really was a
problem, and got my car through a nearby inspection station -- all for
about $35 in repairs.  I've even driven my Saab from Baltimore to DC
more than once just to take it to Rossi's (before I found API through
this board).

Very reputable service center. If you own a Saab, you couldn't pick a
better place to take it for service. Saab certified technicians, very
honest, very fair, high quality work. They also are a good source for used
Saabs.

Viking Automotive

Bought a 1996 900S a month ago with known convertible top problems.  When the
top stopped working completely 1/2way up 2 weeks later I took it to Viking
(90 minutes from me) because someone else on this website had reported success
with the same problem with Viking.  The seller had said he was quoted about $1K
to fix the problem (which I intended to live with - the auto top had worked if
you gave it a hand along the way while someone kept their finger on the top down
button) but Viking got it fixed for $310 plus they waited for me when I went to
pick up the car on a day there was a power outage in Gaithersberg.  I will be
back but I wish they were closer; I am  in Waldorf, MD, 75 miles away.

If there was not a quality independent Saab mechanic nearby, I would not own
a Saab. Fortunately, living in the Maryland suburbs of DC, I have a choice
between two quality shops. Interestingly, the shops' approaches to their work
are diametrically opposed. I am very interested in enhancing my car without
unnecessarily spending money. Viking Automotive in Gaithersburg, Maryland, a
quick drive right off of I-270, is truly an ideal shop for me. Eric and Jay,
the owners and technicians, are great guys and have an endless supply of Saab
knowledge. For me,Êmy relationship with my mechanic is important.  I want to
be able to trust them that they will never oversell unneeded repairs and that
they will do the job right the first time.  Eric & Jay have met and exceeded
both of these expectations. Their ample supply of parts cars and used parts
is also a true plus in that they will sell used bits for much less money than
I've seen anywhere else. Treat these guys with the respect they are due and
they will treat you and your car with the service, price and attention to
detail that you require.

Viking Automotive is the absolute best. Just took my 97 Saab
900 SE Turbo Convertible in. Had several issues to address. But I write
because of the convertible top issue. It stopped working (got stuck in
operation) awhile back. Problem seemed electrical. Took it to a Saab
"expert" in the DC area (private Saab specialist). Told me it was the
computer module that controlled the top that was "FUBAR". Part was about
$800-$1,000, plus about an hour or so labor for install. They said I
could try to find a used part (it wouldn't require re-programming) and
they would install (told me that re-programming my existing part would
not be the best/smart choice because re-programming would take 4-5 hours
and there would be no guarantee it would work). So I got a used part for
$125 and thought I was set. Something they said on the phone the day
before they were to install the part, however, made me uneasy (all of a
sudden, the used part would need to be re-programmed too).

So I went searching for another Saab mechanic. Found Viking on this site
and they were a Godsend. I walked in, told Eric about the issue with the
top, how I was told that the computer module was bad and bought a used
one. Without even looking at the car he said it was very unlikely that
that was the problem (he spent almost an entire summer at Saab doing
tops and said the only time this part was ever replaced was when Saab
was paying for it under warranty, i.e., it was done to be safe, but was
never the sole problem).

Sure enough, it wasn't. Long and short, I could have been at least
$1,000 in (much more if I bought the part new) at the other place, and
still wouldn't have even had a working top. My cost at Viking, $450 (it
was the universal joint) and that included re-programming or
re-calibrating the existing computer module which was essentially fine,
just needed adjustment to operate smoothly!

I was going to sell the car, but Eric fixed my AC problem (I can't
imagine what that would have cost at the other place as all signs seemed
to point to the evaporator core, which it appears not to be), did the
95,000 mile service, fixed a transmission mount, fixed an oil leak,
fixed a radiator hose (I think) and a few other odds and ends. Top, AC,
scheduled service and all the misc. stuff added up to $1,375. I've never
so happily doled out that kind of money. Would have been at least twice
that at the other place and who knows whether the issues would have been
fixed. The car runs great and everything works as it should. Viking has
a new loyal customer.
