Headphone jack hardwired into the Aux-In will be way better than an FM transmitter. You'll probably get best results from keeping the iPod's volume around the middle -- if you turn the iPod's volume up too high, you'll cause distortion, likely. Use the Saab's volume control to increase your volume beyond that if you need to.
And, please, don't get overly panicked about my "house of cards" comment on the Saab dash -- I was referring only to the air vent over the center portion of the dash, and the honeycomb of fins contained within it. As long as you're gentle, and don't try to pull it out of the dash using the control knobs, it shouldn't fly apart. Moreover, unless you're planning to mount the iPod on your dash, at the top of the dash, you don't even need to remove the air vent. If all you need to do is get to the back of the CD player to attach the Aux-in port wire, and run that wire to, for example, the center console, it's not necessary to take off the air vent at all. You would only take out the A/C panel and the CD player below it.
