And you feel better too.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How Do You Reconcile the Fact, Ian Glenday ![]() ![]() |
I would say that more frequent oil changes is an oversimplification, and a wrong one, about what a car needs to last a long time. Lack of maintenance is indeed the number one car killer, not infrequent oil changes *with synthetic oil*. It's far easier with dino oil to kill a car with infrequent oil changes, and it's highly likely that long interval synthetic oil changes amplify the possibility of neglect, so on the face of it, a recommendation for more frequent oil changes sounds like a winning proposition, but the act of changing synthetic oil more frequently than 15k just doesn't make a modern car wear any longer. It helps prevent the neglect that is the #1 car killer, but it doesn't help the "wear" with synthetics.
Kinda' like Saab posts the tire pressures in the door jamb at max load and max speed, or 6-8 lbs too high for "normal" driving. It's safer that way, and the number one tire killer is under-inflation, but it does in fact cause the tires to wear prematurely and cause a rougher ride if adhered to blindly. Many mechanics insist that SoCal driving meets the requirement for "severe service" and blindly recomment more frequent oil changes, when what I think should be really said, is that more frequent maintenance and checks is what's needed.
And don't cha' just feel better when you baby your car?..
