Try working with Saab USA for an engine replacement under their 8yr/80,000 extended engine warranty to address your sludge issue.
Luckily, (although you don't feel that way right now), you own a Viggen which is the only 1999 model announced as covered under the extended warranty. Saab USA will want to review the oil service records. You only need to show an oil change every 10k miles since the idiots who wrote the manual suggested that schedule.
My own claim has been denied (I have a base 1999--same engine as in the 2002-2002 converts that are included in the warranty). I'm now looking at going to magistrate court, as I'm convinced no one even looked at the maintenance history I provided. I was also required to have a dealership 'diagnose' the car for $600 by pulling the valve covers and oil pan.
I'm not giving up, however. The dealership quoted me a minimum of $7200 to replace my short block. I'm filing a case in a local magistrate court.
The reason my claim was denied was that I'm the third owner, but I _KNOW_ they are honoring other 2nd and 3rd owner claims (most of these cars are ex-lease vehicles, meaning most are not titled to the original owners).
good luck. do keep all of us posted on your progress....

ps--i'm having my engine reworked at a local shop. best case--the crankshaft can be machined and seized bearings 2 & 3 replaced for about $1000; worst case scenario is a used (and revamped) engine to replace mine for $4000.
car is a cream puff otherwise. every bell and whistle works and is still worth 10-11k with a working engine. hope is to enjoy the fall top down weather then sell it as i've been forced into buying new, reliable and non-Euro chic alternative transportation while the battle with Saab continues. nothing to lose by continuing to be a squeaky wheel. i really, really love the car....secret hope is to hold onto it as a second 'fun' ride.
