Todays cars have a lot of computers inside (called modules or nodes). This is a fairly new technology that I think Volvo started to use in 99.
All the modules talk to each other over a network system called CAN.
What happens is that one module might not "go to sleep" when the car is shut off (they do stay alive for awhile after you leave the car) and it can drain the battery. The module is just hoo humming away in there because it didn't get the shut down command or it forgot that it was sent.
I have starting to see and read about a slew of strange things happening with this new technology cars (especially Volvos) and many of the problems are fixed by rebooting the car or loading a new software to the modules.
Did you read the funny story years ago about "what if, Microsoft would to build cars" and one of the things they listed as perfectly normal was that you periodically had to stop by the roadside and reboot your car and then continue your trip, being perfectly ok with that.
Well, that time is here and car manufacturers are jumping over each other to fill their cars with this technology. Some good some less good.
I can't say if your car have this problem but it might and it could be a bear to find since the module might work perfect and go to sleep every time when tested and then suddenly after you have picked up your car it happens again.
Just make sure that your dealer study all the service bulletins and make sure it has all the latest software in all modules since the 2003 was the first year it also have received the most amount of software updates.
Below is a quote of text relating to the 2003 and a software update for the BCM (Body Control Module).
<Diagnostic and SPS programming improvements. Seatbelt chime at startup. Interior light activation timer. Fix for BCM to "go to sleep" in order to save battery.>
It might or might not have been done on your car.
