I've also noticed that the SID does funny things. It will start high and then "runaway" and keep going lower and lower and lower and you begin to think what just happened. As my car (1997 900S w/ 115K miles) has gotten older the SID has become more and more pessimistic, not sure why.
The only number that really matters is miles driven divided by actual gallons filled. I would say the SID can be off +/- 5%, but mine in particular is anywhere from 2% to 5% pessimistic. That's not really that bad, and I guess the SID is not programmed to come up with accurate instantaneous fuel economy figures. Rather, it needs lots of data over a long number of miles traveled. I think this is true because it's estimating fuel usage based on a fuel map, not actual fuel flow. So lots of data is needed to smooth out the underestimates and overestimates of fuel usage in real time.
