I have a 2005 9/3 Aero. It has a little over 24K miles on it.
Last week, the SID came up with the picture of the wrench, and said "Time for Service."
The previous service was performed about six months ago, when the car had 14,500 miles on it. So, it's been 10K miles and six months since the previous service.
The weather here is very mild, and most of my trips are in the 20-30 mile range, typically on the highway.
When I looked in the "service" settings in the SID, it told me that the oil still had 36% of its lifespan remaining.
I took the car's advice, though, and took it in for service. The dealer told me that even though the SID was telling me it was time for service, no service was required, because the oil still had 36% to go. So, they reset the service interval indicator, but did nothing else.
NOW, of course, even though the oil is just as old as it was before I took the car in, the SID tells me that my oil has 98% of its life still ahead of it, because the dealer has reset the indicator. It's like my oil visited the fountain of youth or something.
So the question is: Was the SID correct when it said I needed service, and the dealer wrong, even though the oil had 36% to go?
If so, now that the service indicator has been reset, how do I know when to take the car in for service? Will the indicator come on again at the appropriate time, even though the car "thinks" that the oil has just been changed?
Why did the "time for service" indicator come on when the oil still had tons of life in it, and it had only been 6 months since the prior service? Does it know something the oil doesn't know?
Thanks for any advice. But please understand, I'm not asking "How often should I change my oil?" I'm asking how to properly follow the maintenance program as recommended by Saab when the "time for service" indicator; the "oil life remaining" readout; and the dealer are all telling me something different.
