I've been looking for a new car for a while and have done a lot of research. Like you, I was alarmed to see that Consumer Reports stated that they expected the 9-3 to have problems with reliability. That expection, however, is based on some issues with some older models. If you look at their chart of ratings (the black or red circles), you notice that there were a number of black (low ratings) for the '03 and earlier models. The '04 and '05 models contained lots of red. It shows that Saab worked out the kinks, but it also shows that Consumer Reports can be inconsistent. I think Mercedes also suffered from the same inconsistencies from C-R.

That said, I'm about to choose the 9-3. Saab's 30k mile no-cost services and warranty should cover most stuff (I would hope) you'll need.
