I own 3 '97 9K's. All autos. One has a stage 3 ECU in it and runs very well with the torque way down low. When I am puttsing around it shifts at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm.
I drove the 9-3 v6 the other day and was surprised to see it shift at much higher engine speeds...like it did not have the claimed torque. The engine seemed like it had a little valve lash or something. Very nice smooth car. decent power. Economy, I am hearing, is not so good.
But the 4 is a very well balanced car. And, easy to modify and retain good economy.
BTW....The v6 is specific to Saab in the turbo configuetion. Better internals. Should be a beast when modified.
The 4 can be highly modified without fear of reliability issues. It is the same engine block used by several plus Chevy Cobalt. They are modifying those to several hundred hp with stock internals.
Your decision may be based on your driving habits and location.
Good luck.
