This is not likely to happen (at least not in the near future), so I wouldn't worry about it. If GM had wanted to sell off SAAB, they would have done it a looong time ago. GM has poured billions into SAAB and isn't about to pull the plug now.
As an example, GM killed Oldsmobile-a dmestic brand that almost sold as many cars in the US (125,897) in its last full year (2003) as SAAB did worldwide in 2003 (131,596). In its dying days of 2003, the Olds brand more than doubled SAAB US sales (47,914). If you were an accountant, would you kill a brand that sold more cars on its deathbed than a tiny, niche foreign carmaker with two models?
So why keep SAAB?
The SAAB brand in Europe has more cache than GM's other Euro brand (Opel), and GM sees that expanding the brand here and abroad as a more worthy exercise than to kill it altogether. That, and it seems to like SAABs history of innovation, safety and engine technology (Trionic).
Time will tell if they get it right.
Then again, I could be wrong and GM sells the company tomorrow. You better start worrying. ;-)
