I got the manual to have fun and save $1200, not to save gas.
Generally, modern automatics tend to have identical or better mileage than manuals. It's something I have noticed in the last 2-3 years particularly with 5,6 speed automatics. The manual tranny now can't claim any real advantages - speed, mileage or otherwise because autos enjoy the same # of ratios, in Saabs and most other cars too. Plus, manuals require clutches every 50k or 80k miles, whereas modern autos are often mx-free for 150k plus. Fluid changes are cheaper than clutches.
But manuals are definitely fun!
