First, recognize that they don't wear themselves out. My theory is that many people "move up" to Saabs from lighter, slower cars that do not have the solid on-road feel that Saabs do. As a result, they drive the car to the same apparent speed or maybe a little more, but objectively they are going much faster, putting much more wear on the brakes. Hence the observation that brakes wear out much sooner than on the previous model. This may or may not be true in your case.

The pads Saab used in '04 are not particularly fast wearing, but they were fairly aggressive towards the rotors, to the extent that the rotors tend to be worn out when the pads are. This is not altogether a bad thing. Mrs. G's Olds sufferred horrible brake vibration caused by the rotors corroding. The pads were less than half worn, but they were so "gentle" on the rotors that the rotors were ruined by the elements.

Starting in '05, I think, and certainly by now, Saab has adopted a ceramic reinforced brake pad (as compared to their previous semi-metallic) which promises longer rotor life, better performance, and less dust.

With regard to Mike Lynch's comment, consider that the shop has an interest in covering itself with regard to brakes. You have (probably) established a track record of bringing the car in on 15,000 mile intervals. The shop asks itself, "will the brakes, at their present rate of wear, make it to 45,000 miles for sure?" That translates as "more than half the original thickness". In other words, you could have 10,000 miles of useful life left in the pads (before they reach 1/8" or the wear indicators). That doesn't make the shop *wrong*, it makes them "prudent", if perhaps overly conservative.
