There are always gonna' be dealer issues.... There are always gonna' be enough dealer issues to keep the dealership service department going and then some. We're seldom weeks deep for an appointment, but it does happen, I think the weather affects the service volume more than anything out here, SoCal folks being weather weenies. I have two old Saabs and one CPO. I take the used ones to my trusted long time indy, Swedish Auto, and do my CPO here at Continental, the dealer.
Working on newer cars vs older cars is a different style of business. I wouldn't be true to myself or the facts if I recommend our dealer service for everyone in all cases. That would be the same oblivious attitude that dealers have, of which we are one. You have to understand a dealers motivation. A Saab dealer is a benevolent monopoly for service and warranty on late model Saabs. There's not always another one, like BMW or Chevy, right up the street. A dealership service department is ripe for being undersold for price of service. It's the lay of the land, the territory, I didn't create it, but I am very realistic about my recommendations, that they be in your best interest, not mine and the dealership I work for.
Dealers often aren't especially fond of taking on the older cars, too time consuming. Besides the indy I use buys all their parts from us anyway. I've always gotten farther by exploiting the synergy of the situation than by showing blind loyalty only to one side. Maybe that'll make you buy a car from me some day. I'll tell you where to get it serviced for the best "deal".
