With gas fast approaching $3/gal. in the US, I'm thinking of starting to use more regular gas (87 octane). In many countries, $3 would be a steal. If extra gas taxes went for road repair and smooth roads, I'd pay $7/gallon. However, high gas taxes usually mean waste and mismanagement. I'm famous for looking at little things and missing the big picture. Anyway, the little thing is that the owner's manual recommends at least 90 octane. I don't know whether that's really true or if they just picked 90 because 91 is the highest possible in certain parts of the country (93 in other parts). If they said 92, then the area with 91 would be upset.
Anyway, assuming 90 is the optimal grade with no benefit above that, I'm considering using partially 87 grade. 89 grade is not made separately but is mixed at the pump between 87 and 91 (or 93). 89 is also more expensive than mixing your own 93 and 87. Furthermore, 89 is lower than 90.
Currently, I have 93 octane in my tank. I'm thinking of filling it with 87 when the tank is half full. Afterwards, I will buy about 50-60% 93 and approx. 40-50% 87. If gas gets a little cheaper or if the price spread between 87 and 93 decreases, then I might fill the entire tank with 93.
Anyone have a different opinion?
